A perfect way of learning vocabulary
by Natalia Janowska and Paweł Zwierzchlewski
Level: intermediate + up
Age: young adults
Time: 45 minutes
Aims: to raise the awareness of learning styles, to develop communication skills
Objectives: students will be able to talk about ways of learning vocabulary
Materials: sheets of paper and markers - one for each pair of students
Procedures:
Step 1: Students are told they would be discovering the most effective way of learning vocabulary for each of them. First they work in pairs telling each other about the ways they learn vocabulary. They write their ideas on large sheets of paper with a marker.
Step 2: Students come up to the board and put up there their sheets with ideas for learning vocabulary.
Step 3: Students read out the ideas of other students and share their feelings about some new ideas that they may have discovered on board.
Step 4: Teacher encourages students to try out some of the new ways of learning vocabulary, explaining that the most effective learners are those that utilize a variety of techniques. Students should hopefully realize at this point that everyone learns in a different way and that a perfect style differs from person to person.
